Heartworm disease is becoming more prevalent in the Chatham-Kent area. It is a parasitic infection of the bloodstream and heart transmitted by infected mosquitoes. Heartworm disease can be fatal if untreated. Luckily, we can test in-house easily by taking a small blood sample. We recommend doing so yearly. This test can also detect the evidence of any tick-borne diseases. To learn more about our testing services and facilities, you can call us at 519-360-4508.

How does a dog get heartworm?

Heartworm infection in dogs occurs when a mosquito carrying the heartworm larvae bites them. The larvae are transmitted into their bloodstream when the mosquito lands and feeds on the dog. Then, they grow, develop and reproduce inside the dog.

Why is testing for heartworm disease important?

Heartworm larvae can grow over 12 inches in length and can do immense damage to a dog's heart and lungs. Heartworm is particularly dangerous for dogs because it takes several months to show symptoms. If the proper treatment is not administered, heartworm disease can be fatal.

How much time does it take to get the results from a heartworm test?

As most tests are sent to our in-house laboratory, test results are usually available within 24 hours.
